Secure Backup to SFTP and FTP SSL

Why to use secure backup based on SFTP and FTP SSL/TLS?

Data backup via open Internet channels has two main disadvantages:

Possibility of intercepting the password that gives access to your data on the server;

Possibility of intercepting the data.

First problem is solved on some FTP servers where the OneTimePassword (OTP) technology is implemented. The idea of this technology is that every time when connecting to the server the client has to use another password. In fact, a new password is automatically generated from the current password using a special rule, which is known only to the server and the client. Even if the violator manages to get the password he will not be able to access the data on the server.

Unfortunately, this technology is not so widely used and there are not so many FTP servers and backup clients that support it. So actually the problem of password interception is just partially solved.

Second problem cannot be solved by any means on ordinary FTP servers because according to RFC959 standard a file is transferred via an FTP link without any coding and if it is intercepted then violators can easily read it. The only solution of this problem is to use encryption before backup and to transfer coded files. Encryption of backup data is implemented in many backup utilities, e.g. in BP the files are coded by the security Blowfish algorithm. However this solution has some drawbacks: of course coding/decoding of data takes some extra time but more unfortunate is to lose the encryption key, which means that you will not be able to access your data.

How the secure backup solves the problem of data interception

There exists a complete and reliable solution of the data interception problem - using cryptographic protected file transfer protocols: SFTP and FTP SSL/TLS. In both protocols passwords and files are encrypted before transferring which guarantee that your data will not be intercepted.
