Network Data Backup

There are two main types of backup via network:

  • Local network backup (LAN),
  • Backup through the external network (Internet).

Backup Premium supports both types of network backup. Below is the detailed information about the local network backup and here you can find the details about the backup through the external network (usually on FTP or SFTP servers).

Backup to Local Network Drives and Shares

Backup of data on another computer in the same local area network (LAN) is one of the most popular types of backup. This is because the backup server is located very closely and it is much easier and cheaper to access it than a remote computer. The other advantages of the LAN backup are:

  • High speed of data transfer,
  • Easy access to backed up data in case of emergency.

Network Backup The close location of the backup server can be on the other hand a disadvantage. Virus attacks and power failures, which are the main causes of data loss, can possibly affect the whole local network. So, the fact that the computers are closely located can result in the simultaneous data loss on both computers - the client computer and the backup server.

Nevertheless the local network backup is the most effective way of data backup in terms of costs/reliability and in most cases it is the right choice if you need to feel confident. If your data are really valuable and you need 100% security and 100% guarantee of data restoring in any situation then the better choice for you is the external network backup.

What can Backup Premium offer for the local network backup?

Backup Premium has the following LAN backup options:

  • Backup to network drives that are mapped on your computer (shown in MyComputer among the other drives like e.g. "Y:\"),
  • Backup to network shares via UNC name (such as "\\server\mybackup"),
  • Backup to network shares that are password protected or require logging in under another account. In this case it is necessary to indicate the login name and password in the backup properties.

Can Backup Premum backup data FROM the local network?

Yes, with BP it is possible to back up files from the local network. To arrange this type of backup you need to indicate the UNC name of a file or a folder (like "\\server\myfiles\") in the adding files dialogue.
